We got our first real taste of fall this past weekend, but we'll all stay optimistic that warmer temperatures will return and possibly an Indian summer.
We enjoyed ourselves at Squaw Valley Saturday afternoon celebrating the engagement of Jenna Funston and Errol Belden. The party was held at the “Cornice Cantina” and it was well attended by friends and family. It was also great to see Kenny and Darleen Funston who came back up from down under (New Zealand) to celebrate Jenna's engagement, and Jenna's sister, Miranda, who traveled from Salt Lake City.
Although the weather was rather blustery and there were sightings of snowflakes at the top of Headwall, everyone had a great time. Our best to Jenna and Errol who are planning an 11/11/11 wedding!
We then proceeded to Piedmont where we spent the night with relatives, and went to the Giants game on Sunday. Although the Bay Area was without a cloud, there was a cool breeze and temperatures were in the high 50s and low 60s. The Giants did pull out an 9-7 win to prevent a weekend sweep by the Arizona Diamondbacks. They still are definitely in the wild card chase and hopefully will fare well during this week's tough schedule.
It's time for football. On our way out of town on Saturday we drove by Surprise Stadium and it looked like the Truckee Wolverines were involved in a preseason scrimmage. I'm sorry I missed it, but I am looking forward to the football season and the new league make-up. With the addition of Elko, Wooster, Fallon and South Tahoe, the Truckee Wolverines will be challenged with the new looks, coaching styles and abilities of these other teams. It should be a very interesting season.
Good luck also to the North Tahoe Lakers who are embarking on an ambitious 2A schedule. On Friday they traveled all the way to West Wendover … more than 400 miles, and, unfortunately were defeated. This team has been struggling for a good number of years due to declining enrollment and a swing in popularity to soccer nearly a decade ago.
It may take years, but I hope that North Tahoe can again field dominant teams in the future like they had in the 80s and 90s. Good luck to the players, coaches, and fans! May you have a great year and retain your school pride and good sportsmanship.
Also good luck to the soccer, volleyball, cross country, and women's golf teams who also participate in the fall.
The little guys. Many of the future players for our high school football teams are already getting started at young ages … very young ages. The Truckee youth football teams practice right across the street from our office. Each evening on my way home, I can see the little “bobble heads” working their hearts out. May they also have “fun and safe” seasons (with an emphasis on fun!).
Dining for the Schools cards are now on sale and it is time to purchase yours. Many fine area restaurants have joined with “Excellence in Education” in a great fundraiser that raises a lot of money annually for the schools and offers fabulous dining rates for those who purchase them.
Some people assume that the cards are a “two for one” deal with the lowest priced meal being free. On the contrary, your card is assigned to “you” and you receive your entrée for half price. So if you have been wanting to order that rack of lamb ... do it, and at half price regardless of what everyone else at the table eats.
The price is $45 a card and, at least for the Nichollses, the cards pay for themselves in 3 to 4 nights out. For more information, list of participating restaurants, and where to buy the cards go to http://exined.org/dining-for-schools . This year the “Manzanita Restaurant” has been added as a participating restaurant. Imagine … half price at the Ritz-Carlton!
Happy Birthday Mary ... and many more!!! Our most avid reader, Mary De Lisle, will be celebrating her 90th birthday (and 90 years in Truckee) this Friday. If you know Mary, give her a call and wish her well. I'm sure she will love that.
