TRUCKEE, Calif. — With an absence of candidates applying for former Trustee Lisa Mohun's Area 4 seat, school district officials have unveiled procedures to appoint a new representative before November's elections.

At the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District board meeting Wednesday night, Superintendent Steve Jennings announced the district is in a “Failure to Elect” status, meaning it must appoint a new trustee to Mohun's seat before the Nov. 2 election. No candidates filed for her Area 4 seat by the extended elections deadline in August.

Jennings said Mohun, who is resigning from the board this month due to relocation outside her Area 4 boundaries, would not need to be replaced before the end of her term because the time is less than four months before Election Day.

However, immediate action is needed to replace her position, he said.

“Basically, it's going to take a little more than a month to go through the process,” Jennings said. “And we'll start the process of advertising and getting some good candidates to come and join us.”

Jennings said a special board meeting must be held with the sole purpose to interview potential applicants. Board members on Wednesday agreed to begin advertising the position immediately and to hold the meeting on Oct. 27.

Due to a paltry showing of willing applicants for the three trustee positions to be voted on in November, trustees said they will need the time to search for someone qualified and willing to fill Mohun's seat.

“I think were going to need some time to twist some arms,” said Area 5 Trustee Bev Ducey.

Of the three open seats, two will run uncontested — Kim Szczurek, the town of Truckee's administrative services director, will become the new Area 1 trustee, and Tahoe City resident Dianna Driller will be the new Area 5 trustee.

Jennings said when the applicant is selected at the Oct. 27 board meeting, he or she will join Szczurek and Driller on the board this December, and all will fill their respective seats for an entire four-year term.
