TRUCKEE - His team had just completed a 44-0 rout against visiting Dayton to open the season, and Bob Shaffer was hardly thrilled about it.
“It was a win,” the Truckee head coach said. “We had a good first quarter. But the other three quarters were pretty bad. Not from a defensive standpoint; our defense did well for the most part. It was our offense that had too many turnovers and penalties.
“We can't play that way and expect to beat anyone else. We can't just play one quarter and think we're going to win.”
On Saturday it worked out just fine, as the Wolverines gained 490 yards of total offense to Dayton's 136, with senior quarterback Ben Bolton connecting on 9-of-10 for 137 yards and three TDs, all in the first half. By then Truckee led 41-0, having outgained the Dust Devils 356 yards to 70.
Dayton (1-1) showed signs of life after the break, limiting Truckee to only a third-quarter field goal, but by that time the score was well out of reach.
“We showed some pride in the second half; we didn't quit,” said Dayton coach Rick Walker. “But it's the same thing every year with Truckee. Bob (Shaffer) does a great job. They have another good, physical team, and we didn't match their intensity at all.”
From the opening kickoff the Wolverines looked like they hadn't skipped a beat since last year's championship run, when they finished a perfect 12-0 en route to a ninth state title.
After holding the Dust Devils to a three-and-out to open the game, Truckee scored touchdowns on four of its first 11 plays from scrimmage to build a 27-0 lead with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Junior running back Griffin Brown found the end zone first, punching it in from 3 yards out after Morgan Nevin set the tone with a 52-yard run on Truckee's first play. After another Dayton three-and-out, Bolton capped a six-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. He then fired a 50-yard touchdown bomb to Luke Theis two offensive plays later, and struck even quicker on the next possession, hitting Colin Christian with a 35-yard TD pass on the first play to push Truckee's lead to 27-0.
“The first quarter we came out hard and looked good. We were ready to play,” said Bolton, complimenting his offensive line for their protection and his receivers for running good, hard routes. “But then we stepped down to Dayton's level. If we want to go back-to-back, we have to finish off teams.”
Cole Roberts broke off runs of 26 and 25 yards midway through the second quarter to set himself up for a 4-yard touchdown run, and a 34-0 lead, and Bolton connected with Mitch Nelson in the end zone with 1:52 remaining in the half to record Truckee's final TD.
“We started out really well, with focus,” Shaffer said. “We looked sharp and we executed. But after that … we just can't play that sloppy.”
Shaffer, unhappy with his offensive first unit's execution after the half, yanked Bolton and company following an opening series that went backward due to several penalties and a fumble.
“I couldn't take any more of watching them,” Shaffer said, grumbling about the number of penalties and miscues. “Why would I want to see any more of that?”
With junior backup Pat Shaffer taking the snaps the remainder of the game, the Wolverines added a field goal in the third quarter – a 40-yard blast off the foot of Austin Ferreira – to round out the scoring.
Christian finished with 72 yards to lead the Truckee rushing attack, and Theis led Truckee receivers with his 50-yard touchdown catch.
