TRUCKEE, Calif. — Two Truckee preschools recently received Nevada County's highest rating for Quality Childcare Environments. Papoose Preschool and Christine's House Preschool both participated in a pilot program designed to evaluate quality child care environments for infants and children of Nevada County families.
Through this Quality Star Rating initiative (administered through the Child Care Coordinating Council), child care programs are invited to participate in a rigorous process to evaluate the environment of care that is provided. Funded by First 5 Nevada County, assessment is made through observation and considers the interactions, experiences, materials and activities available to children using a nationally recognized tool (Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale or ECERS). This voluntary program has been designed to educate child care providers to utilize this tool to analyze the quality of the environment and to support parents in identifying quality child care.
Papoose Preschool co-owner Mike Kahlich was pleased by the school's acknowledgment. He explained that the Quality Stars program serves as a valuable tool to help parents choose the best care for their children.
“When people buy a house it may look great on the outside and inside, yet they hire an expert to tell them how good or bad the house is,” Kahlich said. “Nevada County's Quality Stars are quite similar; an expert from the county has evaluated the site, the program, the interactions and the philosophy of the school.”
Christine Sproehnle, owner of Christine's House Preschool, agrees: “Truckee deserves this award, we are an amazing community of families that support education and a high quality of life. It's obvious I love what I do and it feels great to be recognized with Excellence in Early Education. I am so happy for the national recognition this will give all us as a great place to raise our children.”
Research shows that a child's brain develops most dramatically in the first five years of life. What parents and caregivers do during these first crucial years to support their child's growth will have a meaningful impact throughout the rest of that child's life.
The quality of care affects the way children think, learn and behave, and educated, quality care increases the likelihood of success in school and later in life. A high quality program has the capability of promoting trust, autonomy and a true sense of happiness and well-being in children.
