TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Tahoe Forest Hospital Women and Family Center was designated the 96th hospital in the United States as a center offering optimal levels of infant feeding care, Aug. 2, the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week. The Baby-Friendly Certification is awarded by The Baby Friendly-Hospital Initiative. This world-wide initiative is sponsored by The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund.
To assure Tahoe Forest Hospital (TFH) maintains the high standard of care that the Baby-Friendly Certification designation represents, the hospital undertakes annual quality assurance/improvement projects assigned by Baby-Friendly USA. The designation lasts for five years at which time TFH will undergo another on-site assessment to be designate for an additional five years (www.babyfriendlyusa.org).
“We are committed to giving mothers, their newborns and family members the highest quality of care, support and education in caring for their infants,” said Kimberly Simms, nurse manager, Women and Family Center TFHS. “Being awarded the Baby-Friendly Certification is a true honor and something that we're proud to share with our community.”
The Baby-Friendly Certification awards hospitals that have made a dedicated commitment to implement the 10 steps in aiding mothers with breastfeeding. Tahoe Forest Hospital provides the tools and support for moms and hospital employees to be successful with breastfeeding by providing extensive staff training and educational programs. Tahoe Forest Hospital also offers a nurturing environment that supports mother and infant bonding immediately after delivery.
“We work closely with our community resources, such as the Women Infant and Children program and Placer County and Nevada County Women's Services, as an avenue to provide ongoing support for our new moms,” said Simms.
Cindy Bansen, in support of the Baby-Friendly project, became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She provides a weekly support group to new moms in the community along with private assistance. For more information, please contact Cindy at 582-3247.
