TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Girls on the Run - Sierras, a program that educates and prepares pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living through running, is kicking off another season for young girls in the Tahoe-Truckee community. The program, which combines development education with training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event, launches its Fall season on Sept. 13 and 14 at nine different locations throughout the area.
The popular program instills self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training — all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community. Girls on the Run - Sierras is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, www.girlsontherun.org, which has a network of more than 160 locations across the United States and Canada.
“We are proud to offer Girls on the Run to help boost the self respect of girls in our community through physical activity,” said Katie Pruski, executive director, Girls on the Run – Sierras. “Not only do the girls learn confidence and self respect, but they have a lot of fun while doing it. This is the fourth year of the program in the Tahoe-Truckee area, and we have seen really positive development with the girls who have participated.”
Girls on the Run – Sierras programs are scheduled to be held this Fall at Glenshire Elementary School, Truckee Elementary School, Truckee Community Recreation Center, Alder Creek Middle School, North Tahoe Middle School, Kings Beach Boys & Girls Club, Rideout Community Center, Incline Village Elementary School and Incline Middle School.
Girls on the Run for third, fourth and fifth grade girls takes place Mondays and Wednesdays after school Sept. 13 through Nov. 17.
Girls on Track for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls. This program starts Tuesday, Sept. 14 and takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays after school through Nov. 18.
The cost is $150 per girl, per season, and scholarships are available. Parents can learn more about Girls on the Run or register their girls by contacting Katie at 530-277-1288 or Katie@girlsontherunsierras.org.
