TRUCKEE, Calif. — Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner is searching for applicants for its Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women (locally known as Woman of Distinction Award), which honors women who — through their professional or personal activities — make extraordinary efforts on behalf of women and girls. Women can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else in the community. The club has been recognizing women in our community through this award since 1984.
Applications are available at Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, or by contacting Leslie Williams at 587-6315. Applications must be received by Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner no later than Sept. 14. Mail to SITD at P.O. Box 1423, Truckee, CA 96160 or e-mail to leslie.williams@usbank.com.
Nominees should be women who have made extraordinary differences on behalf of women and girls. Past recipients have spearheaded an effort to open a domestic violence shelter, started a mentoring program for at-risk girls or lobbied companies to provide on-site child care. The recipient will be eligible for additional awards at other levels of the international organization.
Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa. The club joins Soroptimists in more than 120 countries and territories worldwide who offer programs that improve the lives of women through three distinct platforms: Economic empowerment, elimination of violence, and gender equality. The organization's major project is the Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Awards, which disburses more than $1 million each year to head-of-household women who wish to make a better life for themselves and their families by improving their education, skills and employment prospects. Contact Nancy Davis at 550-1433 or visit soroptimist.org.
