TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Truckee-Tahoe walkers go around the clock in the battle against cancer for the America Cancer Society Relay For Life. This celebration of life brings numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer together for a unified effort to fight back against this awful disease.
A workshop for all interested in participating and/or sponsoring will take place Sunday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. at the Truckee Community Foundation office on Donner Pass Road. Park and enter around behind NAPA Auto on Donner Pass Road, across the street from the Old Gateway Center in Truckee.
Teams of enthusiastic people of all ages will gather at Truckee High School’s practice football field on Donner Pass Road for an overnight relay against cancer from 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 19 until 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014.
Live music, fun, food and fellowship make this the get together of the summer for all those attending.
Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life — patients, medical support staff, businesses, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers — to join together in celebration of the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Relay For Life reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference.
Highlighting the evening is the Luminary Ceremony, held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. The luminaries (candle lit paper bags with dedications written on the outside of the bags) line the track. The candles are left burning through the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. Every candle tells a story.
“Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund raiser,” said Lisa Cederbaum, event chair. “Many of the participants will be people who have dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in reducing cancer death rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
