Incline basketball | Girls, boys advance to DIII state championships

RENO — Both Incline basketball teams will contend for Division III state titles after winning their respective state semifinals at North Valleys High School on Friday.

Incline’s girls, seeded No. 2 from the North, trailed for much of the first half and into the third quarter against top Southern seed Lincoln County. But the Highlanders wore down the Lynx in the second half with suffocating defensive pressure and clutch offense to earn a 50-42 win.

Incline’s No. 1-seeded boys built a big lead in a fast-paced, high-scoring semifinal against The Meadows only to let much of it slip away before hanging on for 98-89 victory.

Junior guard Jack Clouthier was on fire, as he went off for 26 points on six 3-pointers, a couple of which came in clutch moments late. Junior point guard Alex Zissis also had a hot hand, making five 3-pointers and finishing with 21 points, while Orin Porter added 19 points, and Ben Snyder and Jack Bessette scored 14 apiece.

The Incline girls trailed 27-23 at halftime before tying the score at 30-30 on a three-point play by sophomore forward Kira Porter midway through the third. The Highlanders scored the next six points to end the quarter on a 9-0 run as they took over the lead for good, holding Lincoln County to just three points in the frame.

Junior guard Molly Franklin came up big in the second half, scoring all 13 of her points, while Kerrie Tonking also played big with 13 points, Kortney Solis had 10 points and Elise Nelson seven. Porter added 17 rebounds and five blocks.

Incline’s girls will face top Northern seed Pershing County in the state championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Incline’s boys will face top Southern seed Agassi Prep at 4:15. Both games are at Lawlor Events Center on the campus of University of Nevada, Reno.
