Far West athletes clean up at U16 Western Regions

A large handful of Tahoe-area alpine ski racers represented the Far West Division at the U16 Western Regional Junior Championships in Jackson, Wyo., last Wednesday through Sunday.

The event featured 90 boys and 80 girls from the five Western regions — West, Alaska, Northern, Intermountain, Pacific Northwest and Far West. Championship races were held in super G, giant slalom and slalom.

The following Far West athletes qualified for the U16 National Championships in Park City, Utah, from March 29-April 3 and will compete against the top athletes from the Eastern Region and Rocky/Central Region: Kathleen Smith (Sugar Bowl), Maureen Lebel (Lake Tahoe Racing), Annika Hansen (Diamond Peak), Griffin Knorpp (Sugar Bowl), Luke Rodarte (Sugar Bowl), JP Fourie (Sugar Bowl), Keely Cashman (Squaw Valley), Brett Hurt (Squaw Valley), AJ Hurt (Squaw Valley), Payton Norton (Diamond Peak), and Amanda Pretti (Lake Tahoe Racing).

Dan Loman from Sugar Bowl and Lee Schmidt from Squaw Valley will represent the Far West Division as coaches at the U16 National Championships. The event will include freeskiing testing at Snowbird, Utah, skill quest, parallel slalom, GS and slalom races at Park City, Utah, and physical testing, recovery and education forums at the USST Center of Excellence.
