'Little Shop of Horrors' to hit Truckee High School Theater

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Singing! Dancing! Romance! Dentists! Plants!

It’s time to sit back and enjoy the hit show, “Little Shop of Horrors,” produced by the Truckee High School Drama Club. The show centers around a nerdish florist who finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant — that demands to be fed.

Seymour Krelborn is a nerdy orphan working at Mushnik’s, a flower shop in urban Skid Row. He harbors a crush on fellow co-worker Audrey Fulquard.

One day as Seymour is seeking a new mysterious plant, he finds an unidentified plant which he calls Audrey II. The other-worldly plant seems to have a craving for blood and soon begins to sing for its supper. Will Audrey II take over the world or will Seymour and Audrey defeat it?

“Little Shop of Horrors” is the off-Broadway musical comedy by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, collaborators on “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” The pair have won two Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards for their work.

Shows will be performed at the Truckee High School Auditorium during the first three weekends of May.

Friday and Saturday shows (May 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17) will be held at 7 p.m. with Sunday matinees (May 4 and 11) at 2 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now at the Community Recreation Center in Truckee and the Truckee High School Library. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

All proceeds go directly back to the Drama Club to help fund future shows, and to provide educational opportunities for the members to attend the Lenaea Theater Festival and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

As with many recent spring musicals, the show is directed by Peggy Boelk with help from Jeff Engerbretson. Choreography is by Elizabeth Archer of InnerRhythms Dance Theater and vocal direction is by Linda Saxton.
