TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — “On Ugly Ducklings and Cross-Eyed Hens: Living in the gender fringe” will be a thought provoking and empowering discussion led by Dr. Kim Bateman, psychology professor and executive dean of Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee. The visually rich talk based on the classic children’s storybook, “The Ugly Duckling,” is the last event in the 2013-2014 Sierra College Insights’ speaker series. It will take place at Sierra College on Friday, May 9.
“This presentation is designed to engage and provide a spark to move from disenfranchisement to empowerment,” said Bateman. “The archetype of the unusual or ‘ugly’ appears in our cultural narratives and can help us negotiate the crossfire of mixed messages about gender. We will explore the expression of masculine and feminine principles both within and outside ourselves.”
Bateman is known for her captivating story telling and insightful approach to teaching whether she is facilitating a workshop or college psychology class. This summer semester (June 30-July 31) she will teach general principles of psychology from 8:30 to 11:50 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Students can register for the class at sierracollege.edu (the cost is $138).
“We welcome discussion during Sierra College Insights,” said Bateman, who draws from both interdisciplinary and depth psychological perspectives. Her research interests include bereavement, humor and organizational psychology.
The presentation will take place on the Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee campus, 11001 College Trail in Truckee. The evening begins with refreshments generously sponsored by Starbucks from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and the presentation will take place from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Visitors and residents, teens and seniors and all ages in between are encouraged to attend. Space is limited and available by reservation. There is no charge to attend. Call 530-550 -2290 for reservations.
