After opening her salon Luna Blu, Tricia Rose went door to door offering plates of freshly baked cookies to neighboring businesses.
The young woman comes from Ames, Iowa, a town of about 50,000 people, and said she feels comfortable in a small town like Incline Village.
“I strive to go out and meet everybody,” Rose said. “It’s big to get out and introduce yourself.”
The salon owner and stylist said she has been pleasantly surprised with how friendly the community is.
“In the Midwest. you say ‘hi’ and you’re on your way,” she said. “Here people want to know who you are … I think people are glad to have new locals.”
Luna Blu is located on Northwood Boulevard above the 76 Station. Rose opened the salon in September of last year and has put her own twist on the business, which used to be Vanity Salon.
“I’ve gotten feedback that it’s nice to have a more modern salon that’s comfortable,” she said.
BECOMING A ‘GIRLY GIRL’
As a young girl, Rose was the go-to among her friends for hair styling and French braiding.
Growing up with three sisters, she said, “helped (her) become the girly girl” who knew how to weave hair into art.
“In high school, I was always French braiding on the swim team or doing my friends’ hair for homecoming,” Rose said.
Later, in cosmetology school, the stylist said she “felt in her element.”
“I loved every second of it … I see hair as a canvas,” she said.
Tricia worked in the industry for seven years managing salons before opening her own.
Having a positive outlook and confidence are necessary tools to keep going in the competitive industry, Rose said.
“I knew opening my own business wasn’t going to be easy,” she said. “But I had realistic expectations and it’s a great fit for me, I’ve always considered myself a leader.”
RUNNING A MARATHON
In addition to the challenge of running Luna Blu, Rose is currently dedicating herself to running a marathon.
Each morning before work, the stylist trains for the Lake Tahoe Marathon she plans to run Sept. 12.
The mental challenge, Rose said, is an interesting peek into the power of the mind.
“Emotionally and physically it’s very hard,” she said. “It’s testing me a lot, but that’s what I like about it too … it’s amazing what your mind can tell your body to do.”
The early mornings and increasing miles are making her body stronger, and Rose said she’s learning to ignore the voice in her head telling her to quit.
“I’m a true believer in how your mind can control your path in life,” she said. “Now that I’m older, I stay positive and know everything will be OK.”
The lessons Tricia takes from running — discipline, commitment, a positive perspective — are things she said she’s applied to being a salon owner over the past year.
“The physical part and the mental gain of training for something makes you a stronger person as well,” she said. “Having that discipline and drive to do something and reach for a goal has really helped me.”
‘SUCH A CLEAR VISION’
Madelyn Nichols has lived in Tahoe since 1976 and said Rose’s positive outlook brings good energy to the salon.
“It’s really refreshing to see someone with such a clear vision,” Nichols said. “I’m a seasoned hair dresser and to see her perform with such confidence — it’s amazing.”
In addition to the expected salon services such as cuts and colors, Luna Blu offers facial threading — a hair removal technique practiced in the Middle East that is gaining popularity in the United States.
Pandora Garrigan said she used to travel to Las Vegas for threading treatments and is thankful to have found a local salon that performs the technique.
“It’s such an interesting practice,” Garrigan said. “It’s not so harsh on your skin.”
By using a piece of thread to remove the hair by its root, threading is less invasive than waxing or tweezing.
Luna Blu Salon is open Tuesday through Friday at 11 a.m. with Saturday hours by appointment.
