Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has increased in popularity over the last few years and users are looking for new ways to enjoy this activity.
Racing and touring are two of the most widespread SUP activities, but SUP yoga is also growing. If you’re looking for a new way to challenge yourself on a stand-up paddleboard then try SUP yoga.
SUP yoga is a fun and challenging practice that offers the benefits of traditional yoga including balance, alignment and breath awareness, within a setting of adventure.
The yoga postures, or asanas, are experienced differently on a moving foundation, allowing the paddleboard yoga student a deeper journey of the inner world. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when trying SUP yoga:
Consider your weight distribution and how to counterbalance your weight in your movements.
Take asanas (poses) in stages and explore the different levels of each pose.
Be willing to change old patterns and your ways of alignment if you have practiced yoga on dry land.
Continually return your awareness to your breath. The flow of prana (your life force, your breath) is essential in SUP Yoga.
Be playful in your heart and mind, let go.
Incline Village Parks and Recreation is offering stand-up paddleboard yoga sessions this month. Paddleboards are provided and no previous yoga experience is required.
Jennifer Andrews, registered SUP yoga teacher, is instructing two two-day sessions and will customize the class to meet individual levels of experience.
