Squaw Valley's Foam Fest returns for 25th year

San Francisco bluegrass band Hot Buttered Rum may headline this weekend’s Foam Fest at Squaw Valley, but the group will share top billing with the event’s namesake — beer.

Foam Fest will include more than 30 breweries offering their creations to attendees on Saturday. The selection of brewers includes companies from all over the U.S. The West Coast craft brewery scene is well represented, with mainstays like Anderson Valley, Lagunitas, Lost Coast and Sierra Nevada making appearances. Local brewers Tahoe Mountain Brewing Company and FiftyFifty Brewing Company are also expected to attend the 25th annual event.

“It’s gotten bigger and bigger,” said Mary Roll, event coordinator for Disabled Sports USA Far West. “We’re kind of hoping it’s one of the biggest ever.”

The event started in 1990 as a party for volunteers and staff, but has grown into one of the organization’s largest fundraisers, Roll said. Disabled Sports USA Far West is a leader in adaptive sports and recreation for people with disabilities.

“We try to get people to focus on what they can do and not what they cant,” Roll said.

Last year, Foam Fest raised $22,000 for Disabled Sports USA Far West. This year’s goal is to raise $30,000.

Bluegrass favorites Hot Buttered Rim perform at the event from 3:30-6 p.m. The band is set to officially release its eighth album, “Hot Buttered Rum,” in September. The album is already available online. L.A. folk-rock act Miner kicks off Foam Fest’s music from 2-3 p.m.

Also at Saturday’s event, the “Hit the Slopes” raffle returns. The raffle includes skis, snowboards, season passes to several Tahoe resorts and a California Gold Pass, which is good for skiing at 27 California and Nevada resorts for the 2014-15 winter season.

Foam Fest tickets, which include unlimited beer sampling, are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. A $10 donation is encouraged for those attending the event but not drinking. Children 12 and under are free at Foam Fest.
