TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — This April, Tahoe SAFE Alliance is observing Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month. The agency is collaborating with several local social service agencies including Nevada County Child Protective Services, North Tahoe Family Resource Center, Truckee Family Resource Center, and the Tahoe Truckee Child Abuse Prevention Council to provide a number of community activities and events to raise awareness around the importance of prevention and keeping our children and community safe.
Activties will include a Mandated Reporter Training on April 10, 10-11:30 a.m. at TTUSD District Office, a Family Fun Night on April 26, 5-7 p.m. at Truckee Family Resource Center, and Dia del Nino on April 30, 3-4 p.m. at Kings Beach Elementary.
More than 10 million reports of child abuse are made each year in the United States and the Tahoe Truckee area is not immune. In 2012, the Tahoe SAFE Alliance Children’s Program provided services to more than 100 children. Child victims include physical abuse or bodily harm, sexual abuse and exploitation, health and medical neglect, abandonment, intimate partner and family violence, and school and community violence.
By bringing awareness to this crime on humanity during the month of April, Tahoe SAFE Alliance hopes to engage the community in ways that are educational and fun.
“The age-old adage that it takes a community to raise a child is true. If we are going to keep kids safe in their homes, schools and community it will take all of us working together,” said Jessica Brown, Children’s Program Manager at Tahoe SAFE Alliance. “Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and neighbors need to be observant and not be afraid to get involved when it comes to the health and safety of a child.”
Tahoe SAFE Alliance strives to stop the cycle of violence within families by providing a broad range of services to youth and families in the community. These services include: a Pattern Changing Group, Kid’s Time, Pet Therapy, the Safe House Children’s Group, Children’s Yoga Group, and Gardening Group. This year the children’s program has also incorporated a Coping Skills Group to the program. This Group is intended to teach children a variety of healthy ways to deal with stress in their lives. Each week a community volunteer leads the group in sharing a special skill or talent; some of the themes included meditation, theatre, cooking, and creative writing.
