Truckee High senior Ruby Wood returned with some impressive hardware from the United States of America Snowboard Associations National Championships last week at Copper Mountain resort in Colorado.
Riding out of the Woodward Academy at Boreal, Wood won the Junior division (age 16-17) national title in the slopestyle competition held on the final day of competition Thursday.
After crashing on her first run, Wood responded with the best run of her career, landing a frontside 360 off of the first of three jumps to earn the gold medal just ahead of Mackenzie Lapp of Sandy Hook, Conn. Taylor Obregon from Minnetonka, Minn., took home the bronze.
A day earlier, Wood went into the halfpipe competition as the defending national champion and left carrying a silver medal off the podium.
Danielle Brodnick from Mammoth Lakes took the gold and Amie Sinor of Manahawkin, N.J., took the bronze. Brodnick seized the lead on the opening run and held off Wood on the second run to claim the victory.
Wood closed out her high school career with 10 national medals, including three golds, over the past four years.
