More than $77,000 raised through Tahoe-Truckee Excellence in Education's Skiing for Schools

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — As a result of participation by local ski resorts and the community, the Tahoe-Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation successfully raised more than $77,000 this season in support of local education through the Skiing for Schools program.

“Despite a record low snowfall for the second half of the season, the Skiing for Schools program had another successful season that will directly benefit our local schools,” said Laura Abbey Brown, Excellence in Education’s executive director. “Since the Skiing for Schools program began in 1991, $1.25 million has been raised for the Foundation’s grants programs. On behalf of the Foundation, it is our hope that the community recognizes the generosity of our resort partners, and their commitment to improving our community through enhanced education for our students.”

The continued support of Excellence in Education’s ski area partners — Alpine Meadows, Homewood Resort, Northstar, Resort at Squaw Creek, Royal Gorge, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Cross Country and Tahoe Donner — make this program possible each season. On select dates throughout the winter season, participating resorts offer skiers and snowboarders special discounted lift tickets and the opportunity to support local education. The proceeds from these ticket sales directly support the Excellence in Education Foundation, which provides enhanced educational opportunities for local students.

In addition to the contribution of tickets in support of the Skiing for Schools program, through its community giving program, Vail Resorts Echo, Northstar provided a $15,000 cash contribution to Excellence in Education for a second year in a row.

“We are proud to support Excellence in Education through both cash and in kind contributions,” said Bill Rock, Northstar’s chief operating officer. “The Foundation continues to offer significant support to our local schools, giving students access to innovative programs and opportunities they might not otherwise have.”

Excellence in Education would also like to extend special thanks to Porters Sports, Tahoe Dave’s, Paco’s and Alpenglow who serve as outlets for ticket sales throughout the season.
