North Tahoe Middle School hosts honor band

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — North Tahoe Middle School was host to the first California Music Educators Association Middle School Honor Band for this region. Sixty-five students representing six middle schools from around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Crest joined forces for 11 hours of practice, leading to a Saturday night concert.

Under the direction of Shauna Righellis of the Tahoe Music Institute, the students learned and performed five songs. While all pieces were challenging, several students stated they particularly enjoyed playing the Looney Tunes theme. According to second-year participant Elise Avery, “It’s fun to meet a lot of different people, and the music was pretty good, too.”

One parent of a first-time participant was impressed with the improvement in the students’ performance over this short period of time.

Local middle school band teachers Randy Humphreys of Alder Creek Middle School and Lena Meyer of North Tahoe Middle School organized the event.

Other participating schools were Incline Middle School, Quincy Jr. High, Greenville Junior/Senior High, and Indian Valley Academy.
