Incline High’s five-member mountain bike team recently wrapped up its NorCal season with third- and fourth-place finishes in the freshman girls and boy categories and fifth and second overall for the season.
The Highlanders had two riders and their families make the five-hour drive this past Sunday to Boggs Mountain, north of Napa, for the fifth race of the spring, the Norcal High School Championships.
Under sunny skies and warm, dusty riding conditions, Nelson Bedient rode to his third podium of the year and his best finish of the season, finishing third for the championships, and fifth overall for the season in the freshman boys D2 category.
Meghan Kelley continued her streak with her fourth straight podium, finishing in fourth place, while taking second place overall for the season in the girls freshman category. With both athletes having successful seasons, they will automatically advance to the JV division, skipping over the sophomore group next year.
The team’s final NICA race of the season will be the state championships in Novato on May 19, when both the NorCal and SoCal high school mountain bike race leagues come together to finish off the year. Three athletes have qualified to compete and will be representing Lake Tahoe and Incline High School.
Incline team members also compete in the Reno MTB Twilight series Thursday nights, which offers categories for all ages. The team is racing locally this spring to support youth mountain biking and provide positive role models to younger riders just learning the sport.
Bedient, racing in the men’s B, finished second, and Russel Conway finished sixth. Racing women’s A/B, Kelley finished second and Conor Drewes, a first-year racer in the junior varsity category, continues to improve and move up through the field.
The Incline High mountain bike team receives no funding from the school and is supported solely by business in the community.
