Christopher Oren Hawtrey passed on Thursday, June 14, 2013, in Reno, NV at the age of 76 with his wife Nancy, children Sara, David, and John, and daughter in law Kelley at his side. He suffered critical injuries in a car accident. His body could not recover from these acute traumas.
He will be remembered as a loving, accepting, and warm father and welcoming friend. He always enjoyed family and guests in the cabin in Truckee. He celebrated the success of his children and grand children and accepted and loved each of them unconditionally.
Christopher Oren Hawtrey was born July 2, 1936 in Burlington, Wisconsin to the Rev.William Charles Hawtrey and Ora Longley Hawtrey. He attended schools in Ft. Atkinson, WI, Waverly Iowa and graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1954.
He received his BA from University of Iowa and taught science classes at Bremen High School in Midlothian II. He received a grant to study at West Virginia University and received his MS and continued his studies at Northwestern University, Evanston, II. Studying under Dr. Erwin Goldberg he earned his PHD in Biochemistry. He did a post doctorate at the University Hayward (now East Bay) and San Jose State University. After retiring he relocated to Truckee, CA and enjoyed playing golf, bridge and bocce ball.
Christopher is survived by his wife of 48 years Nancy of Pleasanton and Truckee, CA, son David, wife Kelly of Mammoth Lakes, CA, son John of Hillsboro, OR, and daughter Sara Jones, husband Christopher, grandchildren Trevor and Megan of Santa Rosa, CA and brothers Charles Hawtrey, wife Jo Ann and James Hawtrey, wife Margie of Iowa City, IA. He was preceded in death by his son Mark Christopher Hawtrey, brother John Hawtrey , and sister in law Nancy Hawtrey of Bryan, TX.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 13m at Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks District Building at 4pm.
