20 -150 Truckee History Day
Truckee History Day, Aug. 10, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Truckee’s 20 -150 year anniversary celebration at Truckee Regional Park, 10050 Brockway Road, Truckee. You’ve seen signs for Brickelltown, the Titus house, the Kruger house, Moody’s hotel, and Cabonas, but who were these people? Discover stories from the establishment of Coburn’s station to Truckee’s role in snow removal and aiding the snowbound City of San Francisco streamliner. The Truckee Donner Historical and the Truckee Donner Railroad Societies are staging this event as part of Truckee’s 20-150 year anniversary celebration. In addition, children of all ages can have rides on model trains run by the Sacramento Valley Live Steamers. There is no charge for the events, but donations would be appreciated.
Waterpalooza and TDPUD team up
Waterpalooza will offer water-themed fun and games including a Log Jammer waterslide, mega slip ‘n slides, Aqua Blaster and more at Tahoe Donner’s golf driving range, 12750 Northwoods Blvd., Aug. 10-11, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. A barbecue lunch will be available with hot dogs, burgers, and more. The cost is $15 per person for an unlimited wristband or individual tickets are available for purchase at $1 each. The Truckee Donner Public Utility District will be on site on Saturday, Aug. 10, holding a free toilet exchange for qualifying TDPUD water customers. English tutor training in Truckee
You can help adults in the Truckee community improve their reading, writing, speaking and/or math skills. Volunteer today to become a literacy and or ESL Tutor with the Read Up! Program based out of the Truckee Library. There will be a tutor training on Monday, Aug. 12. Books and training are provided. Read Up! is a free tutoring service. Literacy/ESL tutoring is an enjoyable and productive opportunity to give back to the community. You must be at least 18 years of age. Silicon Mountain to host Jon Gregory
The Silicon Mountain Group, a network of technology professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee area, will welcome Jon Gregory, managing director of Innovate North State, to present “Connecting to Compete: Growing the ‘530’ Regional Economy Through Innovation and Entrepreneurship.” Innovate North State’s vision is to make the “530” region the most economically competitive non-metro regional economy in the U.S. by 2017. Their approach is to focus on entrepreneurs (start-up or well-established companies) who have scalable, differentiated ventures. Calling all artists
The Truckee Public Arts Commission is calling for submissions for the fall exhibit at the Community Recreation Center in Truckee. “Truckee People — portraits of a community” will feature portraits of all mediums including photography, drawing, painting, collage, print, sculpture, portraits and self-portraits. “Truckee People” will be on display from October to January, submissions are due Sept. 6, 2013. Everyone is encouraged to submit entries. Guidelines and entry forms are available in the “Latest News” section of the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District’s website: www.tdrpd.com. An opening reception will be held on Oct. 11, 5-7 p.m. at the TDRPD Community Center. An auction of art and other donations will also take place during the reception. Money raised will be used to sponsor future events and launch a community art bike rack project.
Champagne tasting to benefit Tahoe Institute for Natural Science
The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will host a champagne tasting at the new Bolam Gallery in Incline Village, Nev., featuring multiple champagnes and appetizers provided by North Tahoe Catering. Meet Andrew Bolam and Annie Hooker, husband and wife and owners of the Bolam Gallery. The event will conclude with a small raffle drawing. Prizes for the raffle will include two hand-made mixed media prints by Hooker and a painting that Bolam has created specifically for the event, valued at $2,400, need not be present to win.
Bolam has generously offered to donate 10 percent of all proceeds for art sold during the event (or during the month following the event for participants who need a little more time) to TINS. Event to be held Aug. 14, 4-7 p.m., $50 in advance, $60 after Aug. 11, includes a TINS membership for nonmembers and one raffle ticket. Wine on the Water
Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino and Lone Eagle Grille announce the fourth annual Wine on the Water charity event Sunday, Aug. 18, 1-5 p.m. Featuring more than 25 wineries and a dozen local restaurants, the annual event will include exclusive tastings, food and wine, live music, and silent auction, with 100 percent of all ticket and silent auction proceeds donated directly to the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe. Since the inception of Wine on the Water in 2010, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe has raised more than $91,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe.
