INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline Village Recreation Center pool remains on schedule for an Oct. 1 reopening.
In a 5-0 vote, the Incline Village General Improvement District board of directors Monday OK’d a $92,000 contract for Reno-based Adams Pool Specialties to upgrade the pool, which was damaged in a recent vandalism incident.
During Monday’s board meeting, staff was asked if the project could involve resizing the pool to Olympic dimensions — 50 meters long by 25 wide — thus allowing professional and/or international meets to be held here.
“A decision to extend the pool would turn a small project … into a monstrous project,” said IVGID Engineering Manager Brad Johnson. “There is no way we can extend the pool during this closure.”
Staff is looking into costs to install safer glass or netting and for beefing up security at the recreation center by way of more cameras, said Parks and Recreation Director Hal Paris.
Any proposal for potential upgrades would likely be brought before the board at a future meeting.
Staff opted to move up a replastering project planned for the 2014-15 fiscal year, considering blistering and cracks were found after the 25-yard-long, 8-lane pool was drained two weeks ago.
Since the project already was planned to be in next year’s budget, the contract money will be reimbursed next year into the district’s reserves.
Work began Tuesday. During construction — which will include smaller repairs on walkways, lighting and other areas of the pool — the entire Natatorium (the room housing the pool) will be closed, including the sauna.
Most programs and classes offered at the pool will be moved to the pool at Burnt Cedar Beach during the closure.
According to previous reports, an unknown suspect threw a softball-sized rock through a double-pane glass window on the recreation center’s east side sometime overnight on Aug. 12. The rock and shattered glass entered the water, and the 226,000-gallon pool had to be drained per Washoe County health code.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office at 775-785-WCSO (9276) or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.
