TRUCKEE, Calif. — Creative thinking, counting, weighing, measuring and estimating with every recipe are just some of the wonderful things students will encounter on cooking days at Kindred Art and Folk Institute during after-school sessions.
Thanks to New Moon Natural Foods, cooking days have come full circle. “Local organic ingredients get students excited about the food we are preparing in class and help contribute to a lifelong love of healthy eating,” said Nicole Ashton Martin, creative director at Kindred Art and Folk Institute.
Cooking is very much an art form, and it is important to educate minds of all ages that we really are what we eat. Cooking and nutrition are a regular part of each day at Kindred, with more in-depth recipes being explored each Friday during after-school sessions.
“Once we learned what Kindred is teaching — the simple, beautiful and often lost folk arts — we knew we had to support something this rare and special,” said Danika Griffin of New Moon. “Nicole is such an asset to our community. The children are learning things our great-grandparents knew; things that ground them and connect them to the Earth. What a great balance for this tech-heavy generation.”
Kindred sessions are focused on fine, lost, sustainable art and nature study, to learn techniques that were used centuries ago by great artisans and translate that into working practices used today, while also creating new practices that utilize the natural beauty of the environment and use sustainable techniques.
