Former Wolverines dominate in Santa Barbara win

Truckee grad and Santa Barbara City College sophomore linebacker Morgan Nevin was named Defensive Player of the Week for the American Pacific Conference after helping lead the Vaqueros to a thrilling 15-14 win over Hancock.

The 6-1, 230-pounder recorded 15 tackles (five solo) and recovered a pair of fumbles that led to SBCC’s final two touchdowns in the come-from-behind win — the first in 21 years against Hancock, which entered the season opener ranked No. 24 in the state and No. 15 in Southern California.

The Vaqueros overcame a 14-3 third-quarter deficit with spectacular defensive play, including a goal-line stand and two fumble recoveries by Nevin that set up the last two touchdowns.

“All of us expected to win, but we didn’t expect it to be like this,” said Nevin, who’s one of five former Truckee players on the Vaqueros. “Our defense really did a lot and the offense hung in there.”

Nevin wasn’t the only Truckee player to come up big, as Jackson Weed and Dillon Sheedy were among the key contributors in the Vaqueros’ defensive gem. Sheedy and Weed combined to cause a late fumble that Nevin recovered, setting up SBCC’s winning score.

After the Vaqueros’ go-ahead touchdown, Hancock had one last possession, deep in its own territory, but Weed and Sheedy snuffed out the drive by recording sacks on second and fourth down, respectively.

“We came out relentless and never stopped,” said Weed, a sophomore linebacker who had seven tackles and a sack. “The heart of the team is on defense. Our defensive end (Sheedy) got the runner to kind of bobble the ball, then I hit him and it flew out.

“We got after it and never stopped. That’s what defense is all about.”

SBCC moved into the rankings at No. 20 in Southern California.
