Truckee woman won't be charged in fatal July 4 accident

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A Truckee woman will not be charged in connection with a July 4 fatal bicycle vs. pedestrian accident at Donner Lake.

According to previous reports, Petra Borhani-Bakker, 24, was arrested on suspicion of riding under the influence of alcohol after she struck Leonard Richard Whitlow, 46, of Sparks, Nev., while riding her bicycle on Donner Pass Road minutes prior to Truckee’s annual fireworks show off West End Beach.

Nevada County Deputy District Attorney Bill Cornell determined the findings in the case do not support filing a criminal manslaughter charge, according to a Sacramento Bee story last week.

Further, no other charges will be filed against Borhani-Bakker — whose surname was reversed in previous Truckee Police news releases — a spokeswoman for Cornell said Tuesday.

“He reviewed all the reports ... and there was not enough evidence to support criminal charges,” she said.

Cornell was in court Tuesday and not available for comment.

According to previous reports, Borhani-Bakker was uninjured in the incident and remained at the scene when police and emergency crews arrived.

Whitlow suffered major head trauma and initially was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital, then flown to a Reno hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
