Truckee split its nonleague soccer games at Incline on Tuesday, as the boys earned a hard-fought, 2-1 win while the girls fell 3-2 in a closely contested matchup.
In the boys game, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on a goal by senior Rolando Zarate. Incline’s Hugo Garcia knotted the score in the second half and it appeared as if the old soccer rivals were destined to settle for a tie.
But in the final minutes of play, Truckee junior Thomas Arnstein was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out, and he drilled it into the back of the net to lift the Wolverines to a thrilling victory.
In the girls contest, the Highlanders scored first on a goal by sophomore Vanessa Andrade in the second minute before Truckee junior Marcelle Reynaud answered with an equalizer shortly after.
Incline senior Elise Nelson gave the Highlanders a 2-1 lead that they carried into the half when she put in a head ball on a corner kick from Caroline May in the 23rd minute.
Andrade struck again in the 44th minute to give her team some breathing room. It was a good thing for Incline, as Reynaud scored once more in the 67th minute to pull Truckee to within one goal. The Wolverines could not connect the rest of the contest, however, despite many chances, said Truckee coach Katie Jamison.
“We had more than our fair share of opportunities,” said Jamison, adding that the Wolverines had more than 23 shots on the evening, although many did not pose a challenge for Incline’s All-State goalie, Sarah Wright. “It was frustrating not being able to close, but this was a wonderful opportunity for us to revise our formation in preparation for a few upcoming league games.”
With her two scores, Andrade upped her goal total to 19 through the first six games.
The Truckee boys will host Sparks on Friday at 5 p.m. while the girls play at Sparks at the same time. The boys are then scheduled to play at El Camino (Calif.) on Saturday and at Elko and Spring Creek next Friday and Saturday. The girls will host Elko next Friday at 5 p.m. and Spring Creek next Saturday at 1 p.m.
