Dozens of girls in ponytails will wear brand-new pink and purple running shoes as they chase their goal of crossing the finish line at the Reno Red-Nosed Run this Sunday.
Five Incline Village girls will wear their new shoes for the first time at the non-competitive fun run which marks the end of the fall program.
Girls on the Run-Sierras (GOTR) recently provided running shoes to 47 low-income girls thanks to a grant from Catapult, a crowd-funding platform dedicated to funding projects that advance the lives of girls and women.
The Girls on the Run team of 20 girls in the third through fifth grades will drive over Mount Rose on Sunday with their coaches and running buddies.
This fall marks the eighth season of Girls on the Run at Incline Elementary School. Since 2010, 138 girls have participated in the program at Incline Elementary.
Fifth-grade teacher Renee Rintala has volunteered after school as the head coach since the first season.
“Parents have come to me and shared that the program has inspired them to start running,” Rintala said. “That just shows what a positive impact GOTR has on us all.”
After four years of inspiring girls in Incline, Girls on the Run expanded its program throughout Washoe County last year. This fall, GOTR added four new program locations in Reno for a total of nine teams of 124 girls — a 50 percent increase in enrollment over last year.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit youth development program that instills self-esteem in girls through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training.
The mission is “to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”
All the girls will have the opportunity to reach their goal of crossing the finish line this weekend in Reno.
The 30-hour after-school program culminates in a non-competitive 3 mile run. Reno 5000 is sponsoring the Red-Nosed Run, and Girls on the Run is the nonprofit beneficiary.
