Lack of snow forces indefinite closure of Tahoe-area cross-country resort

NORDEN, Calif. — Royal Gorge will temporarily close its cross-country ski trails beginning Wednesday, Jan. 8, due to lack of snow, officials said Tuesday.

The Donner Summit cross-country resort opened Dec. 9, but “a lack of natural snowfall and warm daytime temperatures have thinned the resort’s snowpack in recent weeks, making it difficult to link ski trails together and groom the resort’s terrain,” according to a press release sent on behalf of Royal Gorge.

The resort will close until further notice. It will reopen when snowstorms allow for continuous cross-country skiing, according to the statement.

The neighboring downhill Sugar Bowl Resort is open with top-to-bottom skiing and riding on five lifts and 25 runs.

Royal Gorge is operated by Sugar Bowl. Visit for more information.
