Accident victim still hospitalized

The Truckee man injured in an Oct. 17 head-on collision on Highway 89 is still in stable, but serious condition, according to Officer John Sattler, of the California Highway Patrol.

"He has a lot of internal injuries," Sattler said, adding that the victim also suffered a broken leg.

Michael K. Althouse, 37, of Truckee, underwent surgery on Oct. 21 and remains on a ventilator at Washoe Medical Center in Reno.

Althouse and his son were hit by an oncoming logging truck after their Jeep Cherokee drifted into the wrong lane. The big rig knocked the Jeep into the west shoulder of the highway; while Althouse was severely injured and pinned in the vehicle, his son was able to crawl out of the back of the Jeep.

After members of the Squaw Valley Fire Department extricated Althouse from his vehicle, the injured man was flown to Washoe Medical Center.
