Truckee motorcyclist dies during police pursuit

Staff reports

A Truckee man died Tuesday night after he crashed his motorcycle on The Strand in Glenshire during a police pursuit.

According to police, David Lee Kurrle, 20, was driving his 2004 Honda off-highway bike without lights and made an illegal pass in Glenshire at 7:40 p.m. A police unit attempted to stop Kurrle and pursued him toward The Strand.

Kurrle then turned south onto The Strand, where the motorcycle left the road, ejecting him. The impact of the crash killed Kurrle, according to police.

Police witnesses were unsure why the motorcycle went off the road, and investigators do not know if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The CHP's Sacramento-based accident investigation team will look into the crash, according to CHP information officer Kirk Bromell.

"[The CHP is investigating] because it involves the Truckee PD and a fatality," Bromell said. "If the PD did the investigation, it would be the PD investigating itself."

The Sacramento investigation team arrived in Truckee Tuesday night and will continue their investigation Wednesday.

Any witnesses to the accident or the events leading up to the accident should contact the Truckee area CHP office at 582-7570 during regular business hours, or the 24-hour hotline at 582-7500.
