Lend a helping hand this summer by volunteering with one of the 28 local non-profit organizations currently linked with Hands on Tahoe, a project that matches volunteers with the services that need them.
There are literally hundreds of volunteer positions available on the North Shore and Truckee that include everything from teaching to trail building to fundraising. Some positions are ongoing, others are event-oriented.
“A lot of non-profits cannot operate without their volunteers,” said Volunteer Coordinator Lynette Eddy. “Community outreach programs are the services with the largest need (for volunteers); things like Meals on Wheels and Tahoe Women’s Services.”
Also in demand are grant writers, Web designers and people who can help with marketing, Eddy said.
In addition to the 28 organizations already on board with Hands on Tahoe, which is a project of the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, more than 100 others, such as the Bear League, Head Start Preschools, the Lake Tahoe Music Festival and the North Lake Tahoe Wedding Association are still unaffiliated. Hands on Tahoe is now working to connect those groups as well.
“A lot of our volunteer opportunities are concentrated in Truckee and we want to make sure that we are reaching all the way to Kings Beach,” said Volunteer Coordinator Lorna Leyton.
To make an even greater impact, the network is also touting a new program of employer-supported volunteerism, through which local businesses give their workers either time off or compensation for volunteering in the community.
“It’s good for the business; it’s good for the community,” said volunteer coordinator Arlene Becker.
