Local man still in coma after Thanksgiving accident

The 45-year-old Truckee man struck early Thanksgiving morning on Interstate 80 remains in a coma.

Heading westbound on I-80 near Floriston at about 5 a.m. Nov. 23, Kevin Macrorie got out of his vehicle to check on an accident when he was struck by another vehicle, resulting in major injuries. The first accident — as well as subsequent accidents — were caused by icy conditions on the road.

The CHP was unavailable for comment regarding the driver of the vehicle that struck Macrorie.

Macrorie was transported to Renown Health center in Reno, where he is still being treated.

Debbie Macrorie, Kevin Macrorie’s sister, said he was driving up from Reno to do snow-removal when the accident happened.

“We are fortunate he made it to the hospital,” she said. “We’ve been told by health professionals that it’s miraculous that he survived the initial accident.”

Kevin Macrorie is currently on life support in the intensive-care unit at the hospital, and the extent of his injuries are not yet known, Debbie Macrorie said.

“They are not able to give us much — with head injuries people are unconscious for weeks, months — they just don’t know,” Debbie Macrorie said.

She said Kevin Macrorie has lived in Truckee for about 20 years, and is married to Mary Beth Macrorie with three daughters in high school.

Mary Beth Macrorie said her husband is caring, giving, funny and a good father. As the accident showed, she said, he would help anyone in need.

She said an account has also been set up at the Truckee Branch of the Wells Fargo Bank, and donations can be made both at the branch and online to help the family. The account number is 5229487342, and people with Wells Fargo accounts can do direct transfers, and those with other accounts can use bill pay, Reece said.
