Sorenstam takes on sports wellness role

Professional golfer and part-time North Shore resident Annika Sorenstam has joined the Tahoe Mountain Club as director of sports wellness.

The Swedish-born athlete, who long held the world’s No. 1 ranking before Lorena Ochoa took over the top spot from the injured golfer last week, will act as senior advisor for the club’s sports, health, wellness and nutrition programs, said Blake Riva, senior partner for Tahoe Mountain Club owner East West Partners.

As a strategic partner with Tahoe Mountain Club, Sorenstam will be sought for consulting before the club puts seasonal programs in place, Riva said. The position is unpaid and previously did not exist, he added.

“It’s a bit of a tradeoff,” Riva said. “We get her time and expertise and she gets to use the club’s amenities while here.”

Those club amenities include access to three golf courses — Old Greenwood, Coyote Moon and The Golf Club at Gray’s Crossing — swimming, tennis and fitness centers at the Old Greenwood Pavilion, skiing at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, private dining options and more.

Sorenstam, who has owned a home on the North Shore for about seven years, Riva said, generally stays in Tahoe during the summer and fall months and again in the winter. She is an avid skier and tennis player who when visiting her second home is “really living the Tahoe lifestyle,” Riva said.

“In joining Tahoe Mountain Club as director of sports and wellness, I have an opportunity to combine my passion for Tahoe with my passion for fitness, health and wellness,” Sorenstam said in a release. “Tahoe Mountain Club is a unique combination of some of my favorite year-round activities like skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking and, of course, golf.”

Sorenstam, last year’s U.S. Women’s Open champion, is nursing a bulging disk in her back and a ruptured disk in her neck but hopes to return by the end of June to defend her title.

She will join Peter Jacobsen, Tahoe Mountain Club’s director of golf, on July 9 for the grand opening of The Golf Club at Gray’s Crossing.

Annika Sorenstam has 10 career major championships, including last year’s U.S. Women’s Open. She has 69 tournament victories (15 internationally), eight Player of the Year Awards and seven Solheim Cup appearances. Currently battling nagging neck and back injuries, Sorenstam hopes to recover by late June to become the third player to win four Women’s Opens.
