SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — A bistate task force created to take a look at the land management policies in the Lake Tahoe Basin that possibly contributed to the level of devastation seen during the Angora fire met for the first time on Monday.
Tasked with examining a wealth of information before a March 2008 deadline, the meeting on Monday was an introduction to a process scheduled to include two-day meetings in South Lake Tahoe over the next several months.
“Today is designed to vet the most critical issues,” said California State Fire Marshal, and co-chair of the commission, Kate Dargan.
After hearing presentations from several agencies, including the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and taking public comment from several organizations and individuals, the commission tentatively assigned its 20 members to two committees.
One of the committees is designated a “Homeowner and Community Safety Committee” to look primarily at land management issues on private property, the other is a “Forest Fuels Committee,” principally looking at issues on public lands.
The Commission’s structure remains flexible and the division of the commission into the two committees will not hinder discussion on issues that overlap the public and private domains, according to Dargan.
One item likely to be on the next meeting agenda is discussion on recommending an emergency order, which could see the suspension of some policies in the basin in order to quickly reduce the threat wildfire poses to the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for Sept. 21.
The agenda for that meeting will be available today.
