Chas Guldemond rides the short bus home to victory during Boreal’s Jibassic Pro Rail invitational Saturday night. Guldemond and Ian Cosco, the winner of the ski competition, each took home $3,000 for their efforts.
Winter arrived with a slide and a bonk Saturday night as Boreal Mountain Resort’s third annual Jibassic Pro Rail Invitational opened the Tahoe contest season.
Throngs of spectators came out to watch and participate as fresh snow from a recent storm allowed for fantastic conditions in both the contest arena and the public jib area. Rounding out the festivities were two movie premieres and a massive bonfire.
“It was beyond our expectations, an overwhelming success,” said Jon Slaughter, Boreal’s marketing manager. “The new snow saved the day as we built a huge public jib area. We got to feed everybody’s need to slide.”
The jam format contest featured professional skiers and riders vying for the winner-takes-all, $3,000 prize purse. Announcers also handed out crisp $100 bills midcontest to competitors who stuck the biggest tricks or took the most brutal falls. There were plenty of spills, as athletes in both disciplines laid it all on the line for the cash.
Truckee resident Chas Guldemond took home the purse for the snowboarders by landing consistent and powerful tricks on both the rails and the school bus.
“Great first contest of the season,” said Guldemond, 20. “The school bus was rad.
“Amazing to see so many people out, too. This is the most people I have seen at a Tahoe comp.”
Ian Cosco, 20, was the top skier, taking home $3,000 for technical tricks such as a 270 onto the down box.
In total, 15 skiers and 17 snowboarders competed, including 16 local athletes.
