The man arrested in Nevada for suspicion of murdering his wife, a Tahoe Truckee High School graduate, will now be charged with first-degree homicide in Lyon County.
The trial of Michael Fixer Newcastle, accused of murdering Shelby Hagedorn Joanette, 36, is set to proceed next July, said Lt. Rob Hall of the Lyon County Sheriffs Department.
Joanette attended school in Truckee and was the 1989 Truckee Rodeo Queen, but was living in the town of Fernley at the time of her death.
Joanette died on May 8 in a Reno hospital after being shot twice in the head. Nevada police arrested Newcastle, her estranged husband, who will now face first-degree murder charges with a weapon enhancement, Hall said Monday in a phone interview.
Newcastle also used the alias Michael Christopher Young.
After the couple divorced, Lt. Hall said Joanette moved from Las Vegas to Fernley, where her family currently resides and where her estranged husband is accused of following her.
We see that a lot, men tracking women down, said Client Services Coordinator Julia Santos-Coy of Tahoe Womens Services. If a guy is clever enough, he will find you.
Joanette is one of the many victims of spousal abuse that Tahoe Womens Services remembered as part of Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Santos-Coy, who works in the Truckee office, advises women in this type of situation to educate themselves, join a support group, and eventually change their social security number and name if deemed necessary.
In August, the organization collaborated with Joanettes parents to host an auction and memorial barrel race at the Truckee Rodeo. All proceeds benefited Tahoe Womens Services.
The parents wanted to increase the awareness of domestic violence, said Rosie Striffler, the agencys violence prevention educator. Their hope is that this doesnt happen again.
