<b>Tell me about Girls on the Run.</b>
It is a self-esteem and healthy living program for little girls in elementary school, and we teach the self esteem and healthy living through running. So we are actually training the girls to run a 5K.
<b>How old are the girls?</b>
Between third and fifth grade.
<b>How long have you been involved with the program?</b>
This is my first year doing it. I actually moved to Truckee to start and run this program. It’s a national program and this is the first time it’s come to the region. I pretty much quit the corporate program to do this — to move to Truckee and to do the program with little girls.
<b>Why did you want to work with kids?</b>
I have always felt attached to little girls being empowered and I just personally feel that it’s important for little girls to feel empowered. When I found out about this program, I just felt that this was an opportunity. I like to see little girls get the best opportunity that they can in their lives.
<b>How does running empower girls?</b>
The program itself is really about mental, physical and emotional stability. So that’s a great basis to go through life with. Basically, with Girls on the Run, we go over a lot of subjects that aren’t taught in school. And I think running, or any sport, empowers.
<b>And the girls run a 5K at the end?</b>
Basically, we train them for three months while we’re covering these topics. The girls are running and they don’t even know that they’re training for a 5K at the end of it. But the girls are running so much that they’re really prepared for a 5K. So this year, every single one of my girls finished the 5K event with their sole mates — their running buddy/mentor. Each girl gets a running buddy.
<b>What’s the future for the program?</b>
We basically piloted the program at Glenshire this fall, which was September, October and November. We had 18 girls. We had a very successful season and we will be offering the program at Glenshire, Truckee Elementary, Tahoe Lake and Kings Beach Elementary. So in the spring of 2008, we will be at all four sites in the region. [Also] great, great women are needed as running buddies.
<b>What’s the most pronounced difference between life right now, and life in the corporate world?</b>
Oh my gosh, there’s so many. Where do I begin? It’s the outdoor lifestyle that Truckee offers. There’s just so many more opportunities for me to be healthy and happy.
