In a special meeting Wednesday evening, the Tahoe-Truckee school district’s board of trustees voted to put a bond measure to Truckee voters in early June.
“The board approved a resolution to go out for a bond to make significant infrastructural improvements to the Truckee elementary and high schools, as well as update the old Sierra Mountain Middle School, so it can be used as another elementary school,” Bill Kraus, Board Trustee , said in an e-mail.
The measure, estimated at $93 million, will pay for facility updates on the Truckee side of the district only. Therefore, only Truckee voters will cast ballots, according to John Britto, the district’s facilities manager.
The district offices, on Donner Pass Road in West Truckee, are currently housed in a 35 year-old structure and will most likely be torn down as part of the plans, according to Britto.
Aside from the need for qualified teachers, Kraus indicated facilities are paramount for student achievement.
“Having modern, safe facilities conducive to learning is also extremely important in accomplishing this goal,” he said.
He characterized the passage of the bond as “vital to being able to continue to offer a quality education to the children of Truckee,” and called on voters to educate themselves within the next five months as to why the district’s Truckee facilities need the infusion of funds.
“I am optimistic that our community, which has always been a strong supporter of public education, will be very supportive of this bond once they understand how important it is to ensuring our children in Truckee are adequately prepared for the 21st century.”
Nevada County election officials could not estimate the date or place of polling, citing their need to deal with February’s primary election business first.
