Norton the buffalo, namesake of the White Buffalo in Truckee, recently relocated after a quick appointment at Shampoo Hair & Makeup Salon.
“I’ve always like buffalo heads,” said Ken Hallmeyer, who collaborated with local architect Rob Rogers to remodel a second home at Donner Lake. “They’re kinda goofy.”
Hallmeyer wanted a real Tahoe-style cabin, and his wife Sandy Alexander likes the “rat pack” era of decor.
“There wasn’t even a hesitation,” said Rogers, owner of RWR Art-Architecture in Truckee. “I used a lot of dusty rose, purple and red, with granite surfaces and stone. The steel work was done by Chuck Grooms.”
And the buffalo head?
“We had been shopping online, we looked at buffalo in Wyoming, but they were really small ones,” said Hallmeyer.
Rogers spotted Norton at the White Buffalo, and approached owner Jerry Woods.
“Oh, we’ve had various Nortons. We’ve probably sold 10 over the years,” said Wood. This Norton originally came from a ranch in North Dakota, and Woods got him in New Mexico.
Now Norton is the piéce de resistance of cabin deco design at Donner Lake.
