Those anticipating the release of the final environmental document for the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement project — which will highlight a preferred alternative — will have to wait a little bit longer.
The 3,200-page document is currently awaiting its final blessing from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Caltrans, which is also signing off on the document on behalf of the Federal Highways Administration, said Deputy Director Peter Kraatz of the Placer County Public Works Department.
“We as Placer County, we are good to go,” Kraatz said. “We are really just waiting for our two partner agencies to say that we feel the same as Placer County.”
Kraatz, however, said he could not anticipate exactly when TRPA and Caltrans will sign off on the document.
Hundreds of pages of public comment and response were sent to each agency last fall for critique. The document that is touring the agencies at the moment incorporates a combined response to the public comments as well as a preferred alternative, which has not yet been released to the public.
“It’s really about the final tweaks to agency review of public comments,” Kraatz said. “And how we’ve responded to those public comments that came in.”
The prolonged review of the final environmental document should not affect the commercial core project’s momentum, Kraatz said. And existing funding remains secure.
“Funding in my mind is not at stake,” Kraatz said. “It’s only at stake in that we’re obviously not fully funded and we really won’t get more traction for funding until we get this final document on the street.”
The projected cost for the commercial core project, including planning, design, permitting and construction, is currently set at about $50 million. Right now, the county has some $24 million secured.
As soon as the document is ready for release, the public will be notified and copies will be distributed online and at the local libraries, Kraatz said. A meeting schedule for the commercial core project will also be set at that time.
