The Placer County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday an ordinance that would prohibit the consumption of alcohol on the banks of the Truckee River during certain summer holidays.
The amendment to county code will need a second approval at the board’s next meeting before it becomes law.
The ordinance bans consumption of alcoholic beverages and possession of open containers within three feet of the water line of the Truckee River between the outflow at Tahoe City and the Alpine Meadows Bridge just south of the River Ranch Lodge.
County officials possess the authority to pass the ordinance to regulate federal- or state-owned land, Placer’s Tahoe Manager Jennifer Merchant said.
County staff recommended the alcohol ban be in effect on July 4, 5 and 6 this summer and July 3, 4 and 5 in 2009. A resolution must be passed by the board before the dates are official, according to the county.
Violation of the ordinance would bring three tiers of fines; $150, $500 and $1,000 for the first, second and third offense respectively.
Fanny Bridge will be exempted from the ban, according to board documents.
The supervisors do not have the authority to ban alcoholic beverages on the Truckee River, a navigable waterway, without passage of legislation, according to notes from the California Senate Rules Committee. A state bill to ban alcohol consumption on the river is currently making its way through the state legislature.
