A suspect who was arrested at the end of January for allegedly breaking into vehicles and stealing personal property in the North Tahoe-Truckee area was arrested again last week on similar charges.
Placer County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Cameron Covington, 25, on Wednesday, April 30 after they linked Covington to two vehicle break-ins earlier that day at Martis Valley Flats.
Covington, a former North Tahoe High student and convicted felon, was released from his prior arrest in January after he posted bail, which was set at $10,000.
Since he violated the conditions of his release, Covington is currently being held without bail at the Placer County Jail in Auburn.
A security camera showed Covington allegedly making a $37.53 purchase at the Kings Beach 7-Eleven last Wednesday afternoon with a credit card stolen from one of the vehicles that morning, said Placer Sheriff’s Detective Sage Bourassa.
Covington’s vehicle was also linked to the incident as a witness reported seeing a silver Jeep Cherokee at the Martis Valley Flats, a description that fit Covington’s car, Bourassa said. Deputies were familiar with Covington’s vehicle from previous investigations.
Deputies arrested Covington at his father’s house after 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Sheriff’s report. Covington came home after his father notified him that law enforcement was looking for him. He was arrested without incident, Bourassa said.
Covington faces five charges from last week’s thefts, including two counts of burglary, fraudulent use of an access card and committing a felony while out on bail, according to court documentation. Those charges will be added to the 11 felony charges Covington faces from January.
At his arraignment last week, Covington pleaded not guilty. A settlement conference has been scheduled for May 20 at 10 a.m. at the Placer County Superior Court Tahoe Division.
Taking into consideration last week’s two vehicle thefts, Bourassa said that the trend was “nothing more than the usual” since Covington’s January arrest, compared to the wave of vehicle break-ins seen in the months before.
“We get a report here and there, but nothing like we had in January. It’s been real sporadic,” Bourassa said. “I know he wasn’t doing what he was doing before and hitting cars left and right. He definitely had backed off.”
Bourassa related Covington’s alleged recent thefts, despite his conditions of release from bail, to an addiction.
“Just like we deal with people who do embezzlement that are really, genuinely nice people but can’t help themselves,” she said. “If they have access to the money then they take the money.”
Covington has a record for various theft charges, but was not on parole or probation when he was arrested in January, Bourassa said. Before this year, Covington was last arrested in 2003.
