As a volunteer working on Measure L to support our schools I’d like to respond to “Welcome to Bondville — now vote no” (Sierra Sun May 6). When it comes to our schools, the only source of funding for infrastructure improvements are local bonds because the state of California does not provide 100 percent new funding for infrastructure.
Once a district has voluntarily raised funds, the district can search for matching grants from the state for new construction. The fact that Tahoe Truckee Unified School District did this so successfully on Measure C led to an additional $12 million from state funds as well as additional monies from developer fees, interest, etc. to support the construction of Alder Creek Middle School.
Additionally, TTUSD used such conservative numbers in their bond projections, that over time this lowered our tax burden from the voter-approved $48 per $100,000 of assessed home value to the current $34.30. With the help of a citizen oversight committee, the money from Measure C was so well managed that all of the promised improvements were made, and Truckee has taken great pride in Alder Creek, the new gyms at Truckee Elementary and Truckee High and other improvements.
TTUSD has a proven track record of investing bond funds wisely and effectively. We understand that this is a tough economic climate and that is why we have worked hard with community members to define the most critical priorities for the schools going forward and to keep our funding within the voter-approved $48 per $100,000 of assessed value — albeit further into the future.
Please remember, we approved Measure C at $48 per $100,000. It was well managed and we were assessed $34.30 per $100,000. Measure L will recommit us to the $48/per $100,000 and extend the life of the commitment. It is really quite brilliant.
Truckee High School was built in 1952 and desperately needs renovation. We cannot accomplish this in any other way other than a school bond. Truckee has always supported education initiatives, not just because it is the right thing for our community and our students, but also because we have proven that the money will be invested wisely here in Truckee where it can enhance our community.
Recommitting to the $48/per $100,000 or the $35.80 per year as a recent guest columnist outlined is a very, very small price to pay for incredible improvements Measure L will bring to Truckee schools.
