With a construction contract awarded, planning below budget and Mother Nature in cooperation, the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District is set to break ground on the new Community Recreation Center May 14.
Construction bids were received on April 30, with the lowest offer from Reno-based West Coast Contractors at just over $13 million — $6.2 million below the original estimated cost, said district General Manager Steve Randall.
Construction of the 30,000-square-foot center will begin this week, and project manager Andy Ramirez of West Coast Contractors said he plans to have the roof up before winter with completion scheduled for October 2009.
“That’s a big milestone to hit,” Ramirez said. “We’re excited about this job and for the future phases of the center.”
While construction plans and contracts for phases two and three — which could add another 40,000-50,000 square feet of space — are undecided, Ramirez said he hopes the district will allow his family-owned company to see the project through to completion.
District board members are continuing discussions on design possibilities for phases two and three, which could include an aquatics center, an ice rink, a performing arts space, additional classrooms, office space and an indoor field house, Randall said.
“It’s a good construction market right now so the sooner we get out to bid, the cheaper it will be,” Randall said.
At Thursday’s board meeting, members further discussed renovating the existing community center to designate it as a performing arts facility, expanding and possibly moving the regional park outdoor ice rink, and downsizing the aquatics center.
“We need to be looking at phase two to see how the big picture fits,” said board Chairman Kevin Murphy at the meeting.
Over the next few months, district staff will start examining different scenarios to present to the board, and the district will conduct a survey to gauge what Truckee citizens would support in terms of a bond measure, Randall said.
Phase one will include a 22,204-square-foot double gymnasium with an elevated running track, an 18,000-square-foot community facility, classrooms, a kitchen, a 29-foot-high climbing wall and office space.
