As construction begins on the new Community Recreation Center and the Truckee park district plans for future projects, three district board members up for re-election will vie for their positions in November.

Incumbents Janet Brady, Marshall Lewis and John Pruyn have all said they will seek re-election this fall to the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District Board.

“We have a lot to accomplish in the next four to five years and I intend to be a part of that,” said Lewis, who has served on the board for six years.

There are two, four-year seats and one, two-year seat open for election, said district General Manager Steve Randall.

Pruyn, the most recently appointed board member, said he plans to run for the two-year position and said the pressing issues he hopes to contribute toward are the West End Beach pavilion project and phase two of the community center.

Although plans for Donner Lake’s West End Beach are still in the early stages, improvements could include enhancing the landscape, relocating the pavilion, improving the parking area and building a small amphitheater.

“I would like to see that project accomplished within the next two years,” Pruyn said. “As a landscape architect, I find I have a lot to contribute and I hope to continue being an asset to the board.”

As the election nears, board members, including the candidates, are hoping for more interest and competition in the local district.

“As a board member, I encourage everyone who is interested in working with the issues we face to come to meetings and see what the board is all about,” said Brady, who will vie for a four-year seat.

Chris Arth — who was appointed as interim director for the district in January, but resigned after learning about a possible conflict of interest — said in a previous interview with the Sun she is tentatively planning to run for a position in November.
Arth currently teaches Mommy and Me classes at the district recreation center, and learned while attending an ethics conference for new public officials that her contract with the district represented a conflict in serving as interim director.

The filing period for candidates opens July 14 and lasts through August 8, and local elections will take place on November 4.
