Truckee senior Arek O’Connell swam to a pair of first-place finishes in the Northern 4A Regional Swimming Finals on Saturday while freshman Cara Silvas finished second in the 500 free.

Both will represent the Wolverines at the State Swimming Championship, which will be held at the UNLV pool on May 17. The top three swimmers in each finals event qualified for state.

Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center, O’Connell set a personal-best time of 21.68 in the 50 free to edge Fritz Roepke of Reno High, who finished in 21.92. Chris Dewey of Incline was third in 22.20. The previous weekend at the Sierra League Championship, O’Connell swam a then-best 22:02.

O’Connell also won the 100 free with a time of 47.94. Matt Grunert of Carson was second in 49.01. Dewey was third in 50.31.

Silvas placed second to Reno’s Ingrid Cardenas in the 500 free with a time of 5:18.42. Cardenas won in 5:15.80.

Competing in the consolation final, Truckee’s Michelle Hoehn placed 13th in the 100 free, posting a time of 1:01.09 in the prelims for a personal record.

Freshman Justin Ondry took 15th in the 100 fly (1:05.54 prelim) and 11th in the 100 back (1:08.55).

The girls 200 medley team of Silvas, Hoehn, Sophie Aaron and Sara Westmorland placed eighth and dropped four seconds off its previous-best time.

In the girls 4x100 relay, Truckee’s team of Angela Raso, Brittany Hunt, Kelsey Dion and Sam O’Connell each bettered their personal-best times by two or three seconds, said head coach Vicky Dewey.
