Warm weather brings cool fishing events

A couple of notable fishing events will be coming up in the near future.

First, the Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers will be holding their annual meeting upstairs at Rosie’s Restaurant in Tahoe City on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m.

This month the club will be holding a swap meet. If you are interested in fly fishing gear and have something that you would like to buy, sell or swap, plan on attending this event.

The Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers are a local fishing club that promotes fly fishing and the conservation of our natural resources. It is a great way to network with some of the areas most accomplished and avid anglers. Whether you are a beginning or expert fly fisher, the club has something for everyone.

Another upcoming event is the 15th Annual Charity Fishing Derby sponsored by Jake’s Restaurant, which will be held on Sunday, June 1.

While I have never personally been interested in fishing derbies, this one supports the local community. All proceeds go to the Lisa Valenzuela Memorial Scholarship fund.

I am told that this event is a great one in which to participate. For a $50 entry donation you get a great buffet brunch (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.), a derby T-shirt and raffle that includes a midweek pass to Squaw Valley.

In addition, your entry fee offers you the chance at some great cash prizes. The largest Mackinaw weighed in will receive a cash prize of $1,000, the largest brown trout $500 and the largest rainbow trout $250. All weigh-ins will be done at Jake’s in the Boatworks Mall.

Fishing begins one hour before sunrise and ends at noon. In order to participate, you must pre-register on May 31 by 5 p.m.

You can register at Jake’s or Pete n’ Peter’s in Tahoe City. Brunch stamps are also available for $15 for those not participating in the tournament.

It is important to note that all California Department and Fish and Game and U.S. Coast Guard regulations apply during this tournament. So sign up early and enjoy a day on the water for a good cause.

These two events are worth attending for those interested in fly fishing and conventional-style fishing. Both support a part of your community, so take them in if you get the chance. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 22 and Sunday, June 1.
