The Truckee High baseball team had one heck of a run.

But after rattling off 11 consecutive league wins, the Wolverines’ hot streak came to an abrupt halt after back-to-back losses in the 3A State Championship tournament this past weekend.

Truckee, the North’s No. 3 seed entering State, finished 14-8 in league play (12-6 regular season) and 20-16 overall.

The final damage was inflicted by familiar foes, as the Wolverines fell 4-1 to first-seeded Spring Creek on Thursday and 3-2 to second-seeded Dayton on Friday morning. Truckee went 1-2 against both teams during the regular season.

Spring Creek advanced to the championship and lost 7-1 to Virgin Valley.

In the Wolverines’ opener, Spring Creek pitcher Jake Moser threw a complete game one-hitter and struck out 14 to give Truckee senior Keven Sahlberg his only loss of the season. Sahlberg finished with a 7-1 record.

On Friday, Truckee junior Justin Vosburgh took a tough loss against Nick Bircheff, allowing a single run in the first, third and fourth innings on seven hits while his team committed four errors behind him.

Offensively, the Wolverines had eight hits and five walks but did not have success running the bases or driving in runners on base. They scored once in the third and again in the fourth on RBIs from Vosburgh and senior John DePew.

Sahlberg and Michael Taylor each went 2 for 2, Kevin Decker was 2 for 4, Trevor Allen 1 for 2 and Travis Dwyer 1 for 2.

The Wolverines won their final nine league games to end the regular season, then swept two games from Sparks in the Northern 3A Regional series to advance to State.
