The Truckee Lacrosse boys high school team took to its home field at Riverview Park Wednesday in a hard-fought match against Galena High School. Galena won the match 8-6, capitalizing on a rash of Truckee fourth-quarter penalties.

Running away with the first-quarter opening face-off, Truckee played strong and went up on Galena early. Truckee Lacrosse team manager Tom Allen felt the team played exceptionally well in the first half.

“The team’s stick skills and overall field sense really looked good. Impressive improvements,” he said.

Even game play dominated the second and third quarter as Galena held on despite Truckee’s continued attack. At the end of the third quarter Truckee was up 6-5.

As the match rolled into the fourth quarter, both teams showed a surge of adrenaline. The already fierce game play got more aggressive. The referees kept things under control with penalty flags flying frequently for both teams.

Midway through the quarter, the penalties stung Truckee a fatal blow as a triple personal foul by a defenseman put them down a player for the rest of the game.

Taking advantage of the extended power play, Galena rushed the Truckee goal for three points in the last half of the fourth to earn the win.

Truckee’s Matt Rabow led his team with three goals, while Kevin Cowie, Kevin Kelley and Ryan Macken each scored once.

Ryan Cowie had two assists and Alex Carlson played big in the middle of the field.
The loss dropped Truckee’s record to 1-3 going into today’s away game against Reno High School.
